Accompanied by rain "Massive death of mayflies" caused slippery roads, leading to 16 vehicles losing control and running off the road. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
At 07:00 on 21 May 2026, reporters reported that on the Ban Khok Ngam–Ban Huai Tad road, Khok Ngam Subdistrict, Dan Sai District, Loei Province, rain had fallen since midnight. This caused mayflies to swarm around the roadside electric poles on both sides and die by the hundreds of thousands, covering the road. As a result, this morning, cars, pickup trucks, and trailers traveling on this route slipped on the road covered with dead mayflies, causing 8 vehicles to lose control and veer off the road.
Additionally, there were 8 more vehicles that lost control, spun out, nearly went off the road, and collided with oncoming traffic, totaling 16 vehicles involved.
Meanwhile, police from Dan Sai and Khok Ngam stations, rescue teams, and the Loei Highway District 2 mobilized personnel and tow trucks to assist the stranded vehicles off the road and clear the dead mayflies from the roadway. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incidents.
