Explosive Device Found to Ambush Tanks at Chong Bok Cambodian Soldiers Obstruct Barbed Wire Fence Installation

The latest situation at the Thailand-Cambodia border: Thai soldiers discovered an improvised explosive device set to ambush tanks at "Chong Bok." Cambodian soldiers obstructed the installation of barbed wire fences. Security forces photographed evidence and are preparing to file a protest with the ASEAN Observers Team (AOT).

At 12:00 noon on 2 June 2026, a report from the Suranaree Task Force (Suranaree TF) disclosed that operational units in the area detected the placement of an improvised explosive device designed to target tanks by Cambodian soldiers within their deployment line, located southwest of Hill 745 in the Chong Bok area.

Thai forces were able to capture photographs of the explosive device from areas under Thai control.

The report added that relevant units will lodge a protest at the local level and escalate the matter to the ASEAN Observers Team (AOT) to proceed with appropriate measures concerning the situation.

In the evening of the same day, Major General Winthai Suwaree, the Army spokesperson, revealed the situation at the Thailand-Cambodia border. At about 09:00 today, the Army received reports from the Suranaree Task Force during their mission to monitor and improve strongholds by installing barbed wire to enhance security within the Thai deployment line at Chong Bok, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. While on duty, Thai forces observed five armed Cambodian soldiers entering the operational area, later reinforced to around 20 personnel. The Cambodian soldiers made loud noises and attempted to interfere with the Thai personnel's work.

Major General Winthai added that Thai soldiers followed strict procedures to control the situation and conducted negotiations to clarify the facts. By approximately 11:30, the situation de-escalated, and the Cambodian forces withdrew from the area. Currently, the situation has returned to normal. However, local forces remain prepared and closely monitor movements to protect sovereignty and maintain security within the framework of the joint statement agreements.

The Army spokesperson emphasized that the improvement of strongholds and installation of barbed wire by Thai troops were conducted properly within Thai deployment lines and strictly in accordance with the joint statement agreements. Since this area is where both sides' forces are deployed in close proximity, Thailand must implement protective measures to ensure safety.
