Blazing Fire Engulfs Warehouse at Popular Market in Khon Kaen City

A fire broke out at a warehouse in Sam Yaek Thai Rung Market, Khon Kaen Municipality. The owner suffered burn injuries. Authorities rushed to contain the fire before investigating the true cause of the blaze.

At 18:30 on 2 June 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Phanupong Burapan, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, received a report via the Kaen Nakhon Radio Center about a fire at Sam Yaek Thai Rung Market, Khon Kaen Municipality. After being informed, he reported to superiors and coordinated with fire trucks from Khon Kaen Municipality and nearby local administrative organizations to inspect the scene, accompanied by Police Colonel Yosawat Kaewsuepthanin, Superintendent of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, and several police officers.

At the scene, the fire had rapidly spread through a shop selling various goods, mostly plastic items which are highly flammable. Initially, the fire was still uncontrolled. Firefighters worked intensively, deploying multiple fire engines to spray water and suppress the flames. Khon Kaen Governor Khajornkiat Rakpanichmanee, along with Khon Kaen Mayor Prasit Thongtangthai and officials from related agencies, arrived to inspect and provide assistance. Initially, there was a burn injury victim who was urgently taken by rescue personnel to Khon Kaen Regional Hospital for medical treatment.

Firefighters were actively controlling the blaze, which was fiercely burning inside the warehouse storing various types of goods. The area was cordoned off to keep the public away due to intense heat from the flames and intermittent explosions, with potential chemical emissions.

Mrs. Rojana Sritsongmuang, 53, a vendor opposite the affected shop, said that in the evening while packing up, several locals shouted to alert that smoke was billowing in the middle of Thai Rung Market. When she looked, she saw a large smoke plume and heavy flames spreading continuously, with heat reaching her shop and surrounding areas. This caused great alarm among vendors across the street. The market owner was injured. She did not know the cause but speculated it might have been an electrical short circuit. The market serves both as a warehouse and trading area, storing various goods inside the warehouse, many of which are highly flammable.

The Mueang Police Superintendent said the fire was still not under control and the cause was unknown. Police and related officials were seeking to question the shop’s employees because the owner, who suffered burns, was urgently hospitalized and unable to provide information. They must wait until the fire is controlled before coordinating with the Forensic Science Center Region 4 in Khon Kaen to inspect the scene, determine the cause, and assess damages.
