Mukdahan Governor Reports Tragic Accident: Pickup Truck Hits Pilgrim Monks, 8 Dead and 4 Critically Injured

Mukdahan Governor announced a tragic accident "an 11-year-old" driving a pickup truck that collided with "pilgrim monks" resulting in 8 deaths and 4 critically injured. Initially, each deceased monk will receive 500,000 baht in compensation.


At 13:30 on 2 July 2026, at the accident conference room on the 5th floor of Mukdahan Hospital, Warayan Boonnarat, Governor of Mukdahan Province, together with Dr. Narong Jankaew, Mukdahan Provincial Public Health Doctor, Dr. Wilas Niron, Deputy Director of Mukdahan Hospital, and Police Major General Phairoj Thaiputra, Commander of Mukdahan Provincial Police, held a press conference about a major accident on route 2034 between Mukdahan Province and Don Tan District, which caused many deaths and injuries.

The Governor said the injured were a group of monks walking a pilgrimage from Phu Monorom Buddha Footprint Temple in Mukdahan Province, heading to Nam Yuen District in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The group consisted of 34 monks and 5 laypeople.

Initially, 5 monks died at the scene and another 3 died at the hospital, totaling 8 deaths. Rescue volunteers and emergency medical teams arrived at the accident site within 10 minutes and transferred all injured to Mukdahan Hospital. Currently, there are 4 patients in critical condition (red code) and 10 in serious condition (yellow code).

Mukdahan Hospital has admitted a total of 23 patients for treatment, including 22 monks and 1 layperson. Most injuries involve broken bones and brain trauma.

Preliminary investigation shows the pickup truck involved had insurance covering accident victims. Each deceased monk will receive 500,000 baht in compensation. Injured monks and laypeople will receive 80,000 baht each, plus actual medical expenses.

Mukdahan Province has established a coordination center at the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and is urgently verifying the names of the injured and deceased, ensuring full assistance to all victims.
