In Kalasin, a pickup truck carrying fresh vegetables crashed violently into the rear of a trailer truck. The vehicle was severely damaged, resulting in two fatalities trapped inside the wreckage. A 32-year-old woman held her infant nephew in her arms and miraculously survived.
At 02:00 on 26 July 2026, Police Lieutenant Nikorn Pinijmontri of Mueang Kalasin Police Station received a report of a pickup truck rear-ending a trailer truck near the entrance to Phon Thong Municipality, Modin Daeng area, on the Kalasin–Somdet Road outbound from the city, Phon Thong Subdistrict, Mueang District, Kalasin Province. Rescue teams from Kalasin Hospital, Sawang Kalasin Rescue Unit, Kalasin Rescue Unit, and local emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene.
At the scene, fresh vegetables including cucumbers, eggplants, and tomatoes were scattered across the road. Nearby, a white Toyota Revo pickup truck registered in Yasothon was found with its front severely damaged, crushed against the rear of a trailer truck registered in Khon Kaen. The driver's cabin was badly damaged. Rescue workers used hydraulic cutters for over 20 minutes to free those trapped inside and recovered two deceased: Somchai Julserm, 39, the driver, and Arinya, 26. Two survivors were Wiyada Julserm, 32, who sustained minor injuries, and an infant under one year old, Arinya’s child, who was in Wiyada’s arms at the time, thus surviving unharmed. Both were rushed to Kalasin Hospital for thorough medical examination.
Wiyada said they had traveled from Roi Et Province to deliver fresh vegetables to customers in Somdet District, Kalasin. Her husband Somchai was driving. There were four passengers: herself, her husband, her niece, and the niece’s baby. The unexpected accident occurred when their vehicle violently crashed into the trailer truck’s rear, leaving them no time to react. Her husband and niece died in the crash, but she and the infant survived.
Donai Sriraksa, 32, the trailer truck driver, said he was driving a cassava truck and had moved the vehicle to the right lane to prepare for a U-turn while waiting for the factory to open for deliveries. Suddenly, he heard a loud crash from behind and saw the pickup truck collide violently into the rear of his truck.
Initially, investigators inspected the accident site, collected evidence, and interviewed involved parties including the trailer truck driver. They will also review nearby CCTV footage to determine the exact cause of the crash before proceeding with legal measures.
