The family wept as they received the body of “Aum,” a crew member of the Mayurinarinee who died in an attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. They lit incense to inform the household spirits according to local beliefs before conducting religious funeral rites.
Reporters stated that at 5:00 p.m. on 6 August 2026, the atmosphere at Ban Sai, Village No. 11, Nong Lek Subdistrict, Sikhio Phum District, Surin Province, was filled with sorrow after the body of Mr. Panupong Meunthan, known as “Nong Aum,” age 26, who died when the cargo ship Mayurinarinee was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, arrived safely at his hometown. Family members, relatives, community leaders, the district chief, and local villagers gathered to bid their final farewell with deep grief.
As the rescue vehicle carrying Nong Aum’s coffin arrived in front of the house to prepare for unloading, the family and relatives wept deeply over the tragic event. The father lit incense to inform the household spirits and placed incense sticks at the entrance, following the local belief and traditional ceremony for welcoming the deceased back home.
The family revealed that Nong Aum’s body arrived on the same day as “Nong Hulun,” intensifying the sorrowful atmosphere. Meanwhile, relatives and villagers offered support and helped prepare the venue to hold a religious ceremony to honor Nong Aum one last time.
The funeral rites include a wake with Buddhist chanting from 6 to 8 August 2026, followed by a cremation ceremony on 9 August at the crematorium of Wat Chaimongkolmuniwas, Trom Phrai Subdistrict, Sikhio Phum District, Surin Province.
