Phuket Provincial Public Health Office, together with hospitals, held a press conference to refute rumors about "Nipah virus infection," confirming no reported cases locally. They have integrated all agencies to elevate surveillance and screening measures.
On 28 January 2026 at 11:30 a.m., at Dok Pib meeting room, Khun Phum Building, Vachira Phuket Hospital, Dr. Dusadee Kongtrakulsap, Phuket Provincial Public Health Doctor, along with Dr. Lalita Kongsihah, Assistant Executive Chairman of Group 6, Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Public Company Limited, and Director of Bangkok Phuket Hospital and Dibuk Hospital, jointly addressed reports circulating on social media regarding infectious disease situations. After joint verification between health authorities and involved hospitals, they confirmed the information was false and could cause public alarm.
Dr. Dusadee, Phuket Provincial Public Health Doctor, stated that currently there have been no reported cases of Nipah virus infection admitted to hospitals in Phuket. All public and private healthcare facilities are strictly implementing screening, surveillance, and infection prevention measures following Ministry of Public Health guidelines, prioritizing the safety of patients, their relatives, and medical personnel.
Dr. Lalita Kongsihah said she is aware of the misinformation and will file a formal police report according to legal procedures to hold responsible parties accountable. She reaffirmed that no cases have been found as claimed.
Phuket Province has stepped up comprehensive preparedness measures against Nipah virus infection, including screening travelers at the international disease control checkpoint at Phuket Airport, especially those from high-risk areas. Surveillance of patients with travel or exposure history has been intensified. Isolation rooms, personal protective equipment, and rapid laboratory testing systems are ready.
Risk communication and health advice are continuously provided to residents and tourists. Moreover, a One Health approach has been integrated with livestock authorities to closely monitor animal diseases, conduct random testing, and prepare response plans for suspected cases to ensure timely containment.
Phuket has enhanced Nipah virus infection screening at the airport by collaborating with the international disease control checkpoint to establish screening points for passengers arriving from West Bengal, India, which has five direct weekly flights from one airline. Risk assessments are ongoing alongside strengthening local public health measures, including increased cleaning frequency and close coordination with disease control agencies to build confidence in safety among residents and visitors.
Phuket health authorities will closely monitor the situation and continue implementing appropriate measures to protect the health and safety of residents and tourists in the area.
