Causes of 12 Earthquakes in Surat Thani Confirmed, No Impact on Ratchaprapha Dam

The Disaster Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources revealed that 12 earthquakes in Surat Thani province were caused by the movement of the Khlong Marui fault group, and confirmed there was no impact on the Ratchaprapha Dam.


9 Mar 2026 GMT+7The Disaster Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources Facebook pagereported a magnitude 3.5 earthquake in Surat Thani province, stating that between 8-9 March 2026, a cluster of 12 earthquakes measuring between 1.7 and 3.5 occurred (data as of 05:30) in Khao Phang subdistrict, Ban Ta Khun district, Surat Thani province.

The largest earthquake was magnitude 3.5 at a depth of 1 kilometer on 8 March 2026 at 17:41, located approximately "Ratchaprapha Dam" to the southeast about 5 kilometers away, and about 16 kilometers southeast of Ban Ta Khun district office.

The cause was the movement of the Khlong Marui fault group, which is oriented northeast-southwest, moving along a left-lateral strike-slip fault. This was classified as a minor earthquake.

Reports indicated that tremors were felt in Khao Phang and Khao Wong subdistricts, Ban Ta Khun district, Surat Thani province, with no damage reported.

Officials from Ratchaprapha Dam, together with Ban Ta Khun district authorities, inspected the dam's stability and found no impact. They will continue to closely monitor the situation.
