Paramilitary Soldier Killed in Shooting During Area Search Authorities Continue Negotiations for Suspect Surrender

A paramilitary soldier was critically wounded and later died at a hospital after being shot while inspecting the area of Ban Rue Po in Narathiwat. Meanwhile, authorities continue efforts to negotiate the surrender of the perpetrator.

On 1 Jun 2026 GMT+7, military, police, and special operations units in Narathiwat province jointly conducted a search operation in Ban Rue Po, Dusongyo Subdistrict, Chanae District, Narathiwat. This followed intelligence about the movements of a violent group believed to be linked to the attempted assassination of the Chanae District chief officer on 1 Apr 2026 GMT+7 in Ban Sukhae, Chanae District, Narathiwat.

As officials carried out the area inspection, the violent group continuously fired weapons at them, resulting in Paramilitary volunteer soldier Wutthipong Chumchue a member of the 46th Ranger Task Force, being critically injured. Despite urgent efforts by the authorities to provide aid and quickly transport him to Chanae Hospital for treatment, he later died due to the severity of his wounds.

Following the incident, officials responded as necessary using tactical measures to protect themselves and ensure the safety of personnel, while securing the scene, thoroughly investigating the facts, and proceeding with negotiations to persuade the violent group to surrender and enter the justice process through peaceful means.

Authorities continue to negotiate with the violent group hiding in the forested area to surrender, despite the group having fired at officials causing one casualty. Officials remain committed to peaceful methods, offering the opportunity to engage in the justice system to minimize losses for all parties.

At the same time, authorities maintain a strict control of the area, deploying additional forces to support operations and intensify efforts to apprehend those involved for legal prosecution.

Officials request the public to avoid approaching the operation area and to closely follow official information for everyone's safety. If anyone notices suspicious individuals or activities, they can report tips 24/7 via the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Front hotline at 1341.

Additionally, officials emphasize that anyone aiding or supporting offenders—whether by helping them escape, hiding them, providing shelter, or supplying food—may be charged under Section 189 of the Criminal Code, which carries penalties of up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both.
