Marine Department Warns of Heavy Rain Fishing Boats Prohibited from Going to Sea Due to Strong Winds and Waves

"Regional Marine Office, Phang Nga Branch" Warns of heavy rain in many areas; fishing boats are prohibited from going out to sea as waves and winds are quite strong, reaching heights of 2-3 meters.

On 16 August 2026, Mr. Surasak Jangjul, Director of the Regional Marine Office, Phang Nga Branch, stated that according to the Meteorological Department's announcement, from 14 to 17 August 2026, Thailand will continue to experience heavy rain in some areas, mostly in the northern, northeastern, and eastern regions due to a monsoon trough passing through the upper northern region, northern Laos, and northern Vietnam. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon with considerable strength is blowing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

From 18 to 20 August 2026, rain will increase in the northern and northeastern regions, with heavy rain in many areas and very heavy rain in some places due to the monsoon trough shifting to pass through the northern and upper northeastern regions. The southwest monsoon with considerable strength will continue to cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. From 14 to 18 August 2026, winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea remain quite strong.

Waves reach 2-3 meters in height, and in areas with thunderstorms, waves exceed 3 meters. In the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves are about 2 meters high, increasing to over 2 meters in areas with thunderstorms. From 19 to 20 August 2026, winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand remain quite strong, with waves 2-3 meters high and over 3 meters in areas with thunderstorms.

Precautions: Mariners are advised to navigate carefully and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms throughout this period. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should refrain from leaving shore from 15-18 and 19-20 August 2026, and small boats in the upper Gulf of Thailand should avoid leaving shore from 19-20 August 2026.

Therefore, the Regional Marine Office, Phang Nga Branch, urges mariners and vessel operators to navigate cautiously, avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms and strong gusts, and small boats under 12 meters in length should not leave shore for open sea during this period. Vessel operators must continuously check the readiness of the vessel and engine while on board, prepare safety equipment, life-saving devices, firefighting tools, and communication devices to be ready at all times. Crew and passengers should wear life jackets at all times while on the boat and closely follow announcements from the Meteorological Department.
