On 1 Sep 2026 GMT+7, reporters learned that Mr. Pramot Kaewnam, head of Mu Ko Lanta National Park in Krabi, revealed that on the afternoon of 31 Aug, park officials received a report from locals about a marine animal carcass stranded at Ao Nui Beach, Ko Lanta Yai Subdistrict, Ko Lanta District. They immediately went to inspect the beach.
They found a female pygmy sperm whale (Pygmy sperm whale), not yet fully grown, measuring 256 cm in length and weighing about 250 kg. No wounds were found on the body. They coordinated with the Andaman Lower Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center to take the carcass for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Preliminary assumptions suggest the whale was a calf, possibly playing with a pod and failing to return to deeper waters during low tide, causing it to become stranded on the beach. However, this is not confirmed as the cause of death; detailed autopsy results are awaited.
