Attakorn Denies Unpreparedness Rumors for 33rd SEA Games, Promises Grand Opening, Expects Economic Impact of 15 Billion Baht

Attakorn affirms readiness to host the 33rd SEA Games and invites everyone to witness the grand opening ceremony, dismissing rumors of unpreparedness. He expects the event to generate an economic turnover of at least 15 billion baht.

On 2 December 2025, Attakorn Sirilattayakorn, Minister of Tourism and Sports, spoke about the preparedness for the 33rd SEA Games, which Thailand will host from 9 to 20 December. He confirmed that the opening ceremony on 9 December will be grand and impressive.

Attakorn explained that some sports schedules remain pending because of adjustments and withdrawals by certain countries, causing minor issues in athlete numbers. Recently, Cambodia withdrew from eight sports events.

When asked about criticisms regarding Thailand's readiness, Attakorn confidently replied that on 9 December, people will witness both the opening ceremony and the event organization. He confirmed that the organizing committee decided to move ten sports from Songkhla to Bangkok and Chonburi, with the overall schedule unchanged.

The Minister of Tourism and Sports discussed the goal of generating economic benefits from hosting the SEA Games, estimating that the influx of athletes, sports personnel, and sports tourists will stimulate the economy with at least 15 billion baht. He acknowledged that recent floods over the past one to two months shifted public attention but emphasized that the government is actively promoting the event and encouraging Thai people to be good hosts.

Regarding the impact of the southern floods on year-end tourism, Attakorn said the National Economic and Social Development Council needs to calculate the figures. Meanwhile, the ministry has prepared activities and facilitation measures to support recovery once flood rehabilitation is complete.
