The Defense Minister revealed that the Thai-Myanmar border is not a major concern despite bullets from fighting on the Myanmar side landing in Thailand. He emphasized that rules are in place to respond if there is any incursion and plans to visit Mae Hong Son and Tak provinces to personally assess the situation.
On 3 Dec 2025 GMT+7 at the Government House, General Natthaphon Nakpanit, the Defense Minister, discussed the fighting in Myanmar near Mae Sot district, Tak province. He said the military has continuously defended both the western and eastern sides of the border. Although media attention has focused on the eastern side, skirmishes have occurred on the western side for some time between Myanmar forces and ethnic minority groups, affecting people living there. Therefore, border forces on the western side remain on alert. Whenever shots cross into Thai territory, warning fire is returned. He reiterated that whether on the west or east, any incursion will be met with immediate response as the forces have established rules of engagement. The military has clear levels of response to neighbor actions, so there is no need for concern.
General Natthaphon stated the area in question is not worrisome as no military incursion has occurred. Previous reports involved bullets crossing into Thailand, but it is unclear which side fired them. Warning shots were returned. Regarding possible Myanmar refugees crossing into Thailand, he said none have been found so far, but the Ministry of Interior is constantly preparing. The governor of Tak province has plans and drills in place.
On whether the situation might escalate, General Natthaphon said Thailand remains continuously prepared since such incidents occur annually. He has consistently told the media that the military monitors both the eastern and western borders. He also intends to find opportunities to visit Mae Hong Son and Tak provinces to follow up on the situation personally.
