Anutin Reveals Trump Has Not Yet Called Uncertain if Border Clash Will End Before Year-End

The Prime Minister revealed that Trump has not yet called to discuss the border issue, stressing that coordination must be through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs only. He affirmed that Cambodia was the first to open fire and did not answer whether the conflict would end before the year’s end, noting it is a matter for security agencies and cannot be disclosed in advance.

On 10 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, gave an interview regarding the leaked phone messages during a parliamentary meeting suggesting contact from Donald Trump, President of the United States, about the clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. He said that President Trump has not yet contacted or coordinated, adding that normally, phone discussions between leaders are scheduled through official channels. If the U.S. President calls, the call would be answered and discussed. He explained that Trump cannot have more information about the situation than the Prime Minister himself.

When asked if a call from President Trump within two days could end the conflict, Anutin said these are separate issues since this concerns two countries. However, it is a goodwill gesture from the leader wishing for peace. He explained that there must be clarity on the issues and reasons behind the conflict. Talks must be scheduled; leaders cannot just call without agenda. There is time to prepare discussion points, and the Foreign Minister must be invited. If necessary, the Supreme Commander and Defense Minister should also attend. Everything must be straightforward.

As for China, there has been no contact yet. If contact occurs, it must be through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Once contact is made, the Prime Minister will be informed again.

Anutin further said that the ceasefire MOU signed by the previous government was not a lesson lost because the government wanted peace in the region and set conditions. However, the other side did not comply. Thus, it is easy to explain to others that Thailand has met all conditions without violating any, and that time there was even a plan to release prisoners of war.

When asked if Thailand would follow if Donald Trump requested a return to negotiations, Anutin said they must first hear explanations and clarifications about the situation from their side. He emphasized that fighting is a military matter and confirmed the Prime Minister has not delegated decision-making to the military. He added that now is the time for all Thais to support one another.

The Prime Minister also stated that the fighting was initiated by Cambodia, which attacked Thai soldiers first and did not comply with the joint declaration. Asked whether the fighting would continue until one side wins, the Prime Minister said he could not say as it is a security matter and whether it will end before the New Year is unknown.

He laughed when asked by the media if he should be more cautious about phone use in the parliamentary chamber.

Reporters asked about phone use in the House of Representatives after media captured chat messages, questioning if more caution was needed. Anutin laughed and responded that the information was from that morning, stating no contact had been received from the U.S. He mentioned someone showed him a message saying, “President Trump has spoken,” and even sent a clip to prove it. He noted it was a public holiday and that the parliamentary meeting was considering constitutional amendments while government officials were off duty, but everything was proceeding smoothly.

After the interview, Anutin left the parliament building, saying he was going to see a dentist and would return to join the parliamentary session again.
