Royal Decree Dissolves House of Representatives, Calls for New General Election to Restore Power to the People

Dissolution of Parliament 2025: The King has graciously issued a Royal Decree to dissolve the House of Representatives effective immediately, citing multiple domestic political challenges and the minority government’s inability to govern continuously, thus returning the power to the people for a new election.

At 05:00 on 12 December 2025, the Royal Gazette website publishedthe Royal Decree on the Dissolution of the House of Representatives, B.E. 2568 (2025).It states that His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun issued this on 11 December 2025, the tenth year of his reign.

His Majesty the King has graciously commanded the proclamation that the Prime Minister has reported that since assuming office in September 2025, the government has been a minority coalition comprising several parties without a majority in the House of Representatives. During this time, the country has faced numerous challenges amid uncertainties in the economy, society, politics, international relations, and global geopolitics, including unrest along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The government has strived by all means to manage the administration efficiently to promptly resolve urgent national problems and aims to establish security, peace, and harmony for the nation, advancing the country’s political governance for the people's welfare. Efforts include promoting constitutional amendments, addressing trade war impacts, driving economic policies to increase incomes and reduce disparities, aiding disaster victims, combating illegal gambling, online gambling, transnational crime, cyber threats, and scams, resolving Thai-Cambodian border disputes through diplomatic negotiations alongside strong defense, and implementing measures to mitigate impacts on the populace.

However, stable governance requires political stability. Given the minority government status and multiple domestic political challenges, the government cannot govern continuously, effectively, or stably. Allowing this to persist would cause political instability, undermine international confidence, potentially severely impact the national economy, and ultimately erode public trust in the parliamentary system and democratic governance.

The appropriate solution is to dissolve the House of Representatives to hold a new general election, thereby promptly returning political decision-making power to the people, the ultimate sovereigns. This will ensure the continuity of the democratic constitutional monarchy and establish a legitimate majority government with stability, enabling smooth and orderly administration.

By the authority of Sections 103 and 175 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand, His Majesty has graciously decreed as follows:

Section 1: This Royal Decree shall be called the “Royal Decree on the Dissolution of the House of Representatives, B.E. 2568 (2025).”

Section 2: This Royal Decree shall take effect from the date of its publication in the Royal Gazette.

Section 3: The House of Representatives shall be dissolved to hold a new general election for members of the House of Representatives.

Section 4: The general election for members of the House of Representatives shall be held on a datedeterminedby the Election Commission, not less than 45 days and not more than 60 days from the effective date of this Royal Decree.

Section 5: The Chairperson of the Election Commission shall act according to this Royal Decree.
