Narong, the new Chairman of the Election Commission (EC), confirmed readiness to hold elections and plans to discuss with the Cabinet next week. He acknowledged the possibility of elections on 8 February 2026, stating he feels no pressure despite accusations of closeness to the 'blue faction' and is confident in doing his best.
12 December 2025 GMT+7 Mr. Narong Klanwarin, Chairman of the Election Commission (EC). He gave an interview at the Election Commission Office after being officially appointed, saying, "When the House of Representatives is dissolved, the EC must convene to set an election date, and we are already prepared. We had anticipated a possible dissolution, so electoral districts have been adjusted based on population changes in some provinces. We expect clarity by Monday or Tuesday. Currently, the EC office has established an election timeline, and we are ready to conduct the election."
When asked if the election date would be 8 February 2026, as media speculated, Mr. Narong said, "That is possible." Regarding the legal requirement for the election to be held nationwide on the same day and whether the Thai-Cambodian border conflict might affect this, he stated they have been monitoring the situation continuously, but the election must be held simultaneously across the country.
Asked if the current situation would allow the election process to proceed, the EC Chairman said, "We intend to do our best." He still believes the election can be conducted. As for holding a referendum alongside the election, that depends on the Cabinet. He said the Cabinet will send representatives to meet the EC next week to discuss the caretaker Cabinet's authority, including approval of the referendum and budget, which is consistent with existing laws. The EC has always followed what is legally permissible.
Asked about concerns over budget approvals amid the border conflict, Mr. Narong replied that they will examine requests carefully, as these come through committees. When pressed about impartiality given accusations of ties to the 'blue faction,' he said election management requires neutrality, following rules and fairness. The EC is ready and confirms the election timeline remains on track without issues.
At the end, when asked if he feels pressured by public expectations as he assumes office, the EC Chairman said, "No pressure, because it is my duty, and I will conduct the election to the best of my ability."
