Sopon Sees Election Unlikely Amid Ongoing Border Evacuations, Cites Election Commissions Role

Sopon Sarum believes that if border residents are still evacuating, elections are unlikely to proceed because voting must take place simultaneously nationwide. He pointed out that if the situation is still unstable, it is the Election Commission's responsibility to assess the appropriateness.

At 10:15 a.m. on 12 Dec 2025 GMT+7 at the Government House, Sopon Sarum, Deputy Prime Minister and Buriram MP of the Bhumjaithai Party overseeing the northeastern electoral region, commented on the upcoming election for all 400 constituencies as mandated by law amid ongoing clashes at the Thai-Cambodian border. He said that if the situation remains unsettled, it is up to the Election Commission. He questioned how elections could proceed while people are still evacuating, adding that it likely cannot happen since elections must be held simultaneously.

Asked about Bhumjaithai Party's campaign efforts in the Thai-Cambodian border provinces, Sopon said there is no problem. He stated that they are taking care of the people there, but when elections will be held is still unknown and depends on the Election Commission.
