Reducing Accidents in 2026: Strict Enforcement of No Drinking and Driving and Helmet Use During the 7 Dangerous Days of the New Year

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat chaired a meeting of the National Road Safety Committee to advance the 2026 accident reduction plan. The Ministry of Interior’s third deputy minister emphasized that governors of all provinces must campaign for safe road use during the 7 Dangerous Days of the New Year, from 30 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, with strict enforcement of no drinking and driving and mandatory helmet use.


At 10:00 a.m. on 12 December 2025 at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, chaired the second meeting of the National Road Safety Policy Committee (NRS) for 2025. The meeting was attended by Mr. Sakda Wichiansilp, Deputy Minister of Interior; Mr. Theeraphat Kachamat, Director-General of DDPM; DDPM executives; NRS committee members; and representatives from related agencies.

. The committee reviewed and approved the integrated plan for road accident prevention and reduction during festivals and holidays for 2026. The plan sets guidelines for operations during the New Year period from 30 December 2025 to 5 January 2026 and the Songkran festival from 10 to 16 April 2026. The five key measures to prevent and reduce road accidents include: 1. Administrative management; 2. Reducing risk factors related to roads and the environment; 3. Reducing vehicle-related risk factors; 4. Promoting safe behavior among road users; and 5. Providing assistance after accidents occur.

Additionally, the committee approved advancing the "Marrakech Declaration" initiative to be presented to the Cabinet for acknowledgment. The Ministry of Interior, through the DDPM as secretariat of the Road Safety Operations Center, was assigned to coordinate with related agencies such as the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Public Health, Royal Thai Police, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Finance to jointly implement the declaration’s guidelines to achieve Thailand’s targeted goals.

Furthermore, Mr. Sakda urged all provincial governors to campaign and raise awareness of "21 January, Road User Safety Day" through all communication channels to continuously promote road safety consciousness. In addition, During the 7 Dangerous Days of the New Year festival in 2026, all provinces are urged to strictly enforce traffic laws, especially for motorcycle riders, focusing on strict no drinking and driving policies. Community leaders, village headmen, village security volunteers, and village health volunteers are encouraged to collaborate in raising awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving to help reduce accident occurrences.
