Julaphan Amornwiwat explains Pheu Thai's five-point stance on the Thai-Cambodian situation, advising protection of sovereignty and responding with prudence to build legitimacy on the global stage under the "World Encircles Cambodia" strategy.
On 15 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Julaphan Amornwiwat, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, posted on his personal Facebook stating that as both party leader and a Thai citizen, he is closely following the Thai-Cambodian border situation with deep concern. He expressed pain and sorrow over the news of losses, with nearly 20 military and civilian deaths and many injuries—losses that should not have occurred. More than 260,000 people have been displaced to 996 shelters across eight provinces. Twelve hospitals have had to close services, along with 218 local health promotion hospitals.
On behalf of the Pheu Thai Party, he reiterated that Thais must unite to protect the country, sovereignty, and society, reaffirming the party’s five-point position as follows.
1. Protect Thai sovereignty: The placement of new landmines along the border violates the Ottawa Treaty, undermines human rights principles, and is not behavior befitting friendly nations. We must defend Thailand’s sovereignty and independence.
2. Respond proportionately: While firmly protecting sovereignty, responses must be measured, rational, and proportionate, adhering to international principles. Smart responses demonstrate our strength and capability, but we will not be careless in safeguarding our citizens and national interests.
3. "World Encircles Cambodia": Strictly adhere to international law and human rights principles. Communicate transparently and credibly with the international community, emphasizing facts to explain the necessity of self-defense and responses. This builds legitimacy and long-term protection for Thailand on the global stage under the "World Encircles Cambodia" strategy.
4. Thai lives come first: The most important priority is the safety of Thai people, both those in border areas and those working in Cambodia. The government must provide comprehensive care, including evacuation, temporary shelter, utilities, hospitals, schools, and income compensation. Vulnerable groups and patients must not be left in risky areas. We recognize that every day of conflict and clashes increases stress for residents in the affected zones.
