Somchai seeks an opportunity for his son Yotchanan Wongwat after his name was listed as a Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidate. He points out that although Yotchanan is new to politics, he is confident in his abilities and insists he will not interfere, allowing him to make his own decisions. Paetongtarn smiled upon arriving at the party.
16 Dec 2025 GMT+7 Somchai Wongwat, former Prime Minister, gave an interview ahead of the Pheu Thai Party's prime ministerial candidate unveiling, expressing confidence in his son, Yotchanan Wongwat, also known as Dr. Chen, who is about to enter politics as Pheu Thai Party's prime ministerial candidate. He affirmed he would not interfere or dictate his son's decisions or work, emphasizing that the matter concerns the nation above personal interests.
When asked about Yotchanan's chances of entering the government house, Somchai laughed before replying, "It depends on the people who will vote. " I can only support his work but will not meddle, as at this point it is a matter of personal conviction and freedom to work with the Pheu Thai Party. As a parent, I am only a behind-the-scenes supporter offering advice as appropriate.
Somchai added that based on his political experience, he refrains from commenting on his son's role as a prime ministerial candidate, recognizing that his son has stepped up to serve the nation and must be allowed to compete fully, with Pheu Thai as the main platform. Being grown up, he must be granted independence. Whether he becomes a leader or not, it should not be interfered with.
When asked if Yotchanan could overcome various crises if he becomes prime minister, Somchai said it depends on whether he is elected. However, he believes everyone in Pheu Thai will fully support him. He is confident the party has tangible policies that the public has experienced, which are now more advanced and reliable. Ultimately, the outcome depends on the people's decisions and votes.
Regarding the suitability of sending his son into politics as a prime ministerial candidate, despite being a newcomer, Somchai replied, "Being new doesn't mean lacking knowledge or ability." He continued that Yotchanan must be given the opportunity to fully demonstrate his potential to prove to the public that, even as a newcomer, with support, he can lead the party and country through challenges.
Meanwhile, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, head of the Pheu Thai family, arrived at the party headquarters. When reporters asked about the prime ministerial candidate to be unveiled today, she only smiled and did not respond.
