
Profile revealed "Teerachai Phuvanatnaranubala" Deputy Leader of the Palang Pracharath Party and Prime Minister candidate preparing to contest the 2026 election
On 16 Dec 2025 GMT+7, following the Palang Pracharath Party's announcement of its Prime Minister candidates for the 2026 general election, the list includes General Prawit Wongsuwan, Ms. Treenuch Thienthong, and Mr. Teerachai Phuvanatnaranubala. The Election Commission announced that candidate registration will be held on 27-28 Dec 2025 GMT+7, with the nationwide election scheduled for 8 Feb 2026 GMT+7.
Teerachai was born on 21 Dec 1951, currently aged 74. He serves as Deputy Leader for Economic Affairs of the Palang Pracharath Party. He is the son of Second Lieutenant Thawon Phuvanatnaranubala and Mrs. Mantana Phuvanatnaranubala. Teerachai is married to Mrs. Wannaporn Phuvanatnaranubala and has three children: Thanaporn, Kanin, and Thanita Phuvanatnaranubala.
He completed lower secondary education at Saint Gabriel's School and upper secondary at Triam Udom Suksa School in 1969. He earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1974. Subsequently, he obtained the advanced accounting certificate, The Fellow of Chartered Accountants, from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England in 1977, and completed the Senior Managers in Government program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School in 2001.
After earning his bachelor's degree and advanced accounting certificate, he began working at the Bank of Thailand in 1977. Between 1991 and 1993, he worked in financial institution supervision and development. Later, he managed the country's foreign reserves. During the 1997 Thai economic crisis, he was part of the Bank of Thailand's committee overseeing the auditing and analysis of commercial banks under policies to bolster confidence in the financial system, including ordering the closure of 56 financial institutions.
In 1998, he was appointed Assistant Governor of the Bank of Thailand in Monetary Policy. In 2002, he became Deputy Governor for Financial Stability. He was appointed Secretary-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission on 28 Dec 2003 and reappointed for another term on 15 July 2008. He resigned from this position on 5 Aug 2011.
He later served as Minister of Finance in the government of Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra. On 15 Mar 2023, General Prawit Wongsuwan, then Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Palang Pracharath Party, officially introduced Mr. Teerachai Phuvanatnaranubala, former Finance Minister.
However, for the 2026 election, various old and new parties are entering the race. Attention will focus on which party will lead the coalition government and who will become the next Prime Minister.
