Election Commission Confirms Nationwide Poll on 8 Feb 2026 Despite Border Tensions

The Election Commission has prepared a three-zone plan to handle elections in border areas if the situation remains unstable, reaffirming that voting will take place simultaneously nationwide on 8 February 2026.

On 26 December 2025, Mr. Saweang Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission, confirmed that the general election scheduled for 8 February 2026 will be held nationwide on the same day, despite ongoing unrest along the Thai-Cambodian border. The Commission plans to use the 11 January local administrative election held in at-risk areas as a model to assess the situation.

The Secretary-General explained that to ensure voting proceeds legally, the Election Commission has devised management plans based on the severity of the situation: white zones, or normal areas unaffected, will hold elections as usual; yellow zones, with a small number of displaced persons, will set up new polling stations outside the original locations but within the same electoral district to ease access; red zones, where elections cannot be held, will have polling delayed only for those specific units to avoid impacting the overall national process.

Mr. Saweang added that if over 75% of voters are outside their registered areas, the Commission will campaign for early voting instead. The Commission will provide transportation to facilitate access to polling stations. Additionally, those who have already registered for early voting but are concerned about the referendum causing travel difficulties may cancel or change their registration between 20 December 2025 and 5 January 2026 to ensure smooth voting procedures.
