Bangkok Election Commission Confirms Peoples Party Candidate Still Qualified New Candidate Allowed with Primary Vote

The Director of the Bangkok Election Commission Office confirmed that the People's Party candidate for the Bangkok Noi-Bang Phlat constituency remains qualified. The party can nominate a new candidate but must conduct a primary vote according to the law and register by 31 Dec 2025 GMT+7.

On 29 Dec 2025 at 13:00, Acting Sub-Lieutenant Samphan Saengkamloet, Director of the Bangkok Election Commission Office, spoke at the office about the case of the People's Party candidate for Bangkok constituency 33 arrested by police on money laundering and drug-related charges. He explained that changes to or withdrawal of a candidate who has already submitted registration can only be made under three conditions: death, disqualification, or having prohibitive characteristics.

Regarding the recent news, it must be determined whether the candidate falls under prohibitive characteristics. Such characteristics require a final court conviction resulting in imprisonment. It is understood that this case does not yet meet those conditions. The candidate is not currently disqualified because the matter is not an offense under election law. However, if the candidate resigns party membership, the party can nominate a replacement. This change requires a party certification that the replacement candidate meets qualifications and has no prohibitive characteristics.

The Director emphasized that if the candidate truly resigns from the party, the party must hold a primary vote through the provincial party representative to select the new candidate. Afterward, the party must submit the candidate's registration to the district election director by 31 Dec 2025 before 16:30 GMT+7. The district director will then withdraw the previous candidate's name and update the list, followed by verifying the new candidate's eligibility like other candidates. If the original candidate does not resign, they remain the candidate as they do not meet the prohibitive conditions.

Additional reports from the People's Party reveal that Mr. Boonrit Raorungroj has submitted his resignation letter to the party registrar. The party is currently in the process of selecting a new candidate to replace him.
