"Nikon," chairman of the Pracha Safety Foundation, is concerned about accidents during the New Year long holiday as travelers become fatigued on the return trip, fearing drowsy driving. He views the extension of alcohol sales hours from 11 a.m. to midnight as increasing risk.
On 30 December 2025, Mr. Nikon Jamnong, chairman of the Pracha Safety Foundation, spoke about travel during the 2026 New Year long holiday. He expressed concern about the death rate during this period since many people begin traveling several days early. He fears that on the return trip, fatigue from extended celebrations may cause drivers to fall asleep at the wheel. Therefore, ensuring drivers get adequate rest is essential.
Another concern is a significant new risk this year: the Alcohol Control Act has lifted restrictions on sales hours from the previous 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. window to allow sales from 11 a.m. to midnight. However, clear definitions and enforcement regarding refusing sales to intoxicated individuals lacking self-control remain unclear from the Disease Control Department. Alcohol testing found cases where injured children admitted to hospitals had consumed alcohol, highlighting ambiguity between police and the Ministry of Public Health on enforcement.
Mr. Nikon further stated that the greatly extended alcohol sales hours, combined with insufficient strict enforcement of rules prohibiting sales to minors and visibly intoxicated persons, will certainly increase accidents related to drinking and driving during this vulnerable period. He urged business operators to take greater responsibility rather than merely benefiting from relaxed restrictions without ensuring customer safety as they should.
Regarding the goal to reduce fatalities during the seven dangerous days starting today (30 December 2025), aiming for a 5% decrease from 321 deaths to 304 deaths in 2026, it may be possible but should not be taken lightly or celebrated prematurely. People are already traveling and dying; for example, data from the Road Accident Victim Protection Company Limited, the Road Accident Information Center, and safety culture networks show that on 29 December 2025 alone, 49 deaths occurred but are not included in this year's count. Therefore, government officials and especially every traveler must take care of themselves, their families, and fellow travelers to ensure a safe start and throughout the New Year 2026.
