Royal Gazette Declares 8 Feb 2026 as Referendum and Election Day

The Royal Gazette published a declaration setting 8 February 2026 as the day for both the referendum and the general election, specifying the referendum question as: "Do you approve that there should be a new constitution?";,

On 2 January 2026, the Royal Gazette website published a Prime Minister's Office declaration on the referendum date, signed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The main content sets Sunday, 8 February 2026, as the referendum date. It explains the rationale: the Cabinet announced in parliament its policy to support holding a referendum and constitutional amendments by listening to the public’s voice and fostering participation from all sectors, in line with Constitutional Court ruling 18/2568 dated 10 September 2025. Therefore, the Cabinet supports this referendum to fulfill the constitution’s intent and deems it appropriate to hold the first referendum to approve drafting a new constitution under Section 9, paragraph two (2) of the Referendum Act B.E. 2564 (2021).

Meanwhile, the Election Commission declared Sunday, 8 February 2026, as the date for the general election of members of the House of Representatives. The Cabinet considered it necessary to hold the referendum on the same day as the general election to save and use public funds efficiently, facilitate the public, and reduce the Election Commission’s burden of organizing separate voting days for the referendum and the general election. The Cabinet sent the key information and issues for the first referendum on approving the drafting of a new constitution to the Election Commission on 18 December 2025. Exercising powers under Section 166 of the constitution and Section 11, paragraph three of the Referendum Act B.E. 2564, as amended by the Referendum Act (No. 2) B.E. 2568 (2025), together with Section 9, paragraph two (2) of the Referendum Act B.E. 2564, the Cabinet resolved on 18 December 2025 to set the referendum date. It is set that 8 February 2026 will be the referendum day with the question: "Do you approve that there should be a new constitution?"
