Democrat Party Rejects Land Bridge Project, Emphasizes Development Must Consult Local People First

Chaiyanat affirmed that the Democrat Party opposes the land bridge project, stressing that development must first consult local residents, and vowed to strongly oppose it if elected to parliament as a representative of the people in the House.

On 5 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Chaiyanat Deddecho, Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party overseeing the southern region, along with Mr. Meesak Phakdeekong, candidate for Chumphon District 3, met with residents of Patho District, Chumphon Province, to introduce themselves and seek support. They also exchanged views on economic development in the area, especially concerning the land bridge project. Members of the Rak Patho and Rak Ranong networks participated, reaffirming their opposition to the land bridge project and submitting a letter to the Democrat Party leader requesting a declaration of sustainable development plans for the southern region.

Mr. Chaiyanat told attendees and members of the Rak Patho and Rak Ranong networks that the Democrat Party does not agree with the land bridge project. He stated that the truth must be spoken: what benefits do the people gain from the land bridge? What does the government gain? Or is the government pushing this mega-project merely to present it to investors? Development must consider the opinions of local residents. If this matter is proposed in the House of Representatives, and if he and Mr. Meesak are elected as MPs, they will join all Democrat MPs to debate against and refuse to support the project. He concluded by saying that if people do not want the land bridge project to proceed, they must support Mr. Meesak and the Democrat Party.
