The Prime Minister announced that Cambodia violated the ceasefire agreement after gunfire from Cambodia landed near Hill 469, injuring one soldier. He affirmed that Thailand is ready to respond both diplomatically and militarily, requesting Cambodia to provide detailed explanations and take responsibility following their claim of an accident.
On 6 Jan 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the Government House, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, along with Sihasak Puangketkaew, Minister of Foreign Affairs; General Natthaphon Nakpanit, Minister of Defence; and Chatchai Bangchuad, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, held a press conference on the Thailand-Cambodia border situation. Earlier that morning, Cambodian forces fired a K gun, which landed on Thai territory near Hill 469, injuring one Thai soldier. The government has been continuously informed and relevant agencies have followed procedures outlined in the agreement for handling such incidents. The military and security forces have lodged a protest with Cambodian security officials requesting an explanation. Thailand will then consider a response. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a formal protest letter from the Thai Foreign Minister to the Cambodian Foreign Minister, highlighting the ceasefire violation and requesting a diplomatic explanation from Cambodia.
“Since the bullet landed on our territory, Thailand is preparing to respond and will consider actions according to Thailand’s decisions,” the Prime Minister said.
Regarding whether the incident was intentional, the Prime Minister emphasized that this is a press briefing and procedures will follow to demonstrate that Thailand acts within the agreement. However, if necessary, Thailand is ready to respond.
On considerations, the Prime Minister said the incident is recent and the military is assessing appropriate responses. Meanwhile, military officials in the border area have communicated between commanders; Cambodia claims it was an accident. If so, Thailand questions how Cambodia will take responsibility. Time will be given for Cambodia to respond, but Thailand assures that preparations from the foreign and security sectors are in place to respond.
On public safety measures, the Prime Minister said operational-level talks are ongoing. Since Cambodia claims it was an accident, provincial governors have been instructed to monitor the situation closely, though evacuation is not currently necessary.
On the possibility of a third round of clashes, the Prime Minister said that during today’s Cabinet meeting, the task force will monitor developments and promptly report details for consideration. When asked if a National Security Council meeting will be held, the Prime Minister gestured to Chatchai, who replied, “Not today.”
