Election Commission Assures Uncle Poms Resignation Wont Affect MP Candidates, Notes All Positions Can Be Replaced

The Secretary-General of the Election Commission confirmed that 'Big Pom's' resignation as leader of the Palang Pracharath Party does not affect candidates running for MP seats, pointing out that every position can always be filled by a replacement.

On 6 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Sa-nga Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission (EC), addressed activist Mr. Sombat Boon-ngam-anong, known as Bok Lai Chut, who expressed dissatisfaction with the EC’s refusal to extend the registration period for participating in the out-of-district referendum. He said that so far no political party has filed a complaint with the EC on this issue, so it is unclear if anyone has been adversely affected.

Mr. Sa-nga explained that Mr. Sombat’s displeasure or grievance over this matter is puzzling since the timeline for the process follows the legal framework and regulations, which are already quite tight.

Mr. Sa-nga also commented on the resignation of Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan as leader of the Palang Pracharath Party, saying he is unaware if the resignation has officially occurred, but under political party law, the party as an organization is a legal entity, and when someone in a position resigns, a replacement will assume that role.

The Secretary-General added that as the election process is underway, the party leader must endorse MP candidates both for constituency and party-list seats. The endorsement as of the registration date is considered complete. Therefore, regardless of any resignation, there is no impact because someone else will assume or act in that role under political party law and the party’s regulations. The replacement process is clearly stipulated by law, specifying the timeframe within which a vacant position must be filled.
