Pheu Thai-Prachachon-Kaonaa Alliance Joins iLaw to Campaign for Approve Vote on 2017 Constitution Amendment

The tripartite alliance of Pheu Thai, Prachachon, and Kaonaa has joined forces with iLaw to campaign for the public to vote "approve" in the constitutional amendment.

On 7 Jan 2026 GMT+7, at Benjakitti Park, the "Run to Change, Write a New Constitution" event was held by the iLaw group, with leaders from various sectors participating to encourage the public to vote "approve" in the referendum for drafting a new constitution. Mr. Chaturon Chaisang of the Pheu Thai Party reaffirmed the party's position, along with seven allied parties, supporting the drafting of a new constitution. He emphasized that political parties have the legal right to campaign in the referendum. He pointed out that the 2017 Constitution has serious structural problems, including undermining the rule of law, distorting checks and balances, and causing independent agencies to lose true independence. These issues directly affect citizens' lives and hinder effective anti-corruption efforts. Therefore, amending individual articles is insufficient and too delayed. Pheu Thai invites the public to vote "approve" to pave the way for a people-centered constitution truly rooted in democratic principles.

Ms. Panika Wanich of the Progressive Movement stated that "tearing up the 2017 Constitution" has been a primary mission since the Future Forward Party's inception and continues with the Prachachon Party. She insisted that citizens must vote "approve" on the referendum ballot to break Thailand's cycle of stagnation. She criticized the current constitution's mechanisms as not designed to combat corruption as claimed, but rather as tools to destroy political opponents, while allies remain unchecked. Otherwise, cases like the 'friend's watch ring' scandal would have faced consequences.

Ms. Rakchanok Srinok of the Prachachon Party stated:She focused on raising awareness about the "third ballot" and questioned the effectiveness of the Election Commission in using public relations budgets, which left rural populations largely uninformed about the referendum. She cited concrete failures of the 2017 Constitution, such as the collapse of the State Audit Office building with no accountability, and the removal of the people's right to initiate the removal of independent agencies, which had existed in the 1997 and 2007 Constitutions. She warned that if the Senate is controlled, all independent agencies will follow, leaving the public powerless to oversee objectionable actions.

However, she invited all sectors, including celebrities and influencers, to help campaign for a people's constitution. This initiative is not about supporting any single party but about advancing the country to achieve a supreme law that is just and genuinely connected to the people.
