Abhisit Says Doubling Party-List MPs from the South Still Wont Make Him Prime Minister Emphasizes Need for Harder Work by Constituency MPs

Abhisit believes party-list MPs will double. He compared the situation, saying that even if every voter in the South chooses the Democrat Party, the party would still only get 12 MPs, which is not enough to become Prime Minister. He emphasized the need for constituency MPs to work harder and revealed plans to campaign across all regions.

On 8 January 2026 in Nonthaburi Province, Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party and Prime Minister candidate, spoke about his visit to Nakhon Si Thammarat on 7 January. He said the people warmly welcomed him, with many saying they had not voted for the party in the past two to three elections but intended to support the Democrat Party this time, which encouraged him. Regarding the goal of gaining more MPs in the South, he said they must work very hard to show voters that if the party-list MPs are chosen simply to make their Prime Minister candidate prime minister, the party-list MPs would remain very few. For example, if all southern voters chose the Democrat Party, they would only get 12 MPs. Those 12 supporting the Prime Minister candidate would not make him prime minister but only give them a seat to have coffee in parliament. Therefore, constituency MPs are crucial in deciding government formation. He also believes the party’s momentum in both Bangkok and the South has improved since the New Year and expects further improvement after Chinese New Year.

When asked if the number of MPs would increase, Abhisit said it is not yet certain how many constituency MPs they will get, but he is sure the party-list MPs will double. He acknowledged starting from a very low base with constituency MPs, so they must work harder. Regarding plans to regain votes in Yaowarat, he said he has already met people there once and they are trying to reach out to as many as possible. For campaigning in other regions, he recently submitted schedules to the Election Commission. He plans to campaign in every region: in Isan at Ubon Ratchathani, in the North at Sukhothai, in Central Thailand at Rayong and Ayutthaya, and in the South at Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla. On 11 January, he will campaign in Phuket.
