Election Commission Secretary-General Clarifies Dancing Campaigns Without Music Are Not Against Election Law, Emphasizes Context Matters

The Secretary-General of the Election Commission stated that candidates dancing during campaigns without music do not violate the law. He emphasized that the context must be considered because entertainment shows and festivities are different matters.

On 8 January 2026, Mr. Saweang Bunmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission, commented on complaints filed to investigate the prime ministerial candidate and party leader regarding dancing campaigns at Siam Square. He said the matter falls under whether it constitutes organizing entertainment shows or festivities under election law. The legal criteria, based on previous standards, differentiate "entertainment shows" from "festivities," mainly by considering whether music is involved that creates enjoyment.

In cases involving artists or influencers, if a candidate who is an artist sings without music, or an influencer dresses in a style similar to their live broadcasts to promote themselves but without elements of festivities such as accompanying music, it likely does not constitute an offense. Such personal campaign expressions without hired music or entertainment shows are permitted.

The Secretary-General added that he has not yet seen all details of the case. Official rulings must consider multiple factors, not just a single action. Judgments require examining various elements. If the Election Commission detects risky behavior or receives complaints from affected parties, it is prepared to conduct investigations following procedures immediately.
