Bawornsak Confirms Campaigning for Both Approve and Disapprove Votes in Referendum Is Allowed Ultimately, Decision Lies with the People

Bawornsak confirms that campaigning in the referendum for either 'approve' or 'disapprove' regarding the constitutional amendment is allowed. He cites that other countries also use this as an election campaign strategy and points out that ultimately, the decision is up to the people.

At 09:52 on 13 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Bawornsak Uwanno, Deputy Prime Minister, gave an interview at the Government House regarding the campaign urging a 'disapprove' vote in the constitutional amendment referendum and whether it would have any impact. He said that the referendum must follow the law. When asked if politicians are legally permitted to express opinions to the public on whether to vote for or against the amendment, Bawornsak stated that they can campaign; otherwise, there would be no point in holding a referendum. This is the case worldwide and cannot be opposed because a referendum allows the people to decide on important matters. Anyone who believes in a certain course of action can express their views.

Regarding the level of public engagement in this referendum, Bawornsak said he observes it through the media and has not visited markets. When asked about Mr. Jes Tonawanik, the Rakchat Party's prime ministerial candidate campaigning against the constitutional amendment, Bawornsak replied that campaigning in any manner is allowed; it is up to the people to decide. In foreign countries, such issues are also used as campaign policies.
