Kritchanont, Deputy Spokesperson for Pheu Thai, slammed the government for selectively handling the contractor involved in the crane collapse case and challenged the Prime Minister to also cancel the Sino-Thai contract due to a large sinkhole on Samsen Road, in order to establish an equal standard.
On 17 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Kritchanont Aiyapanya, Deputy Spokesperson of Pheu Thai Party, commented on the government under Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s order to terminate the contract with Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited in two major projects that experienced serious accidents, at Sikhiu and Rama II roads. He questioned whether this action reflects inconsistent standards and selective treatment, as in the case of a large sinkhole on Samsen Road in front of Vajira Hospital on 24 Sep 2025, a construction project carried out by Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited, where no decisive measures were enforced. Furthermore, Anutin’s responses to the media differed; when asked about the sinkhole, he smiled and left the interview, but in the other cases he showed a tough stance, despite both causing damage and affecting the public.
Challenge to cancel Sino-Thai contract
Kritchanont stated that the government must end its double standards and boldly cancel the contract with Sino-Thai to set a proper precedent. On 2 Oct 2025, Anutin promised to expedite the problem and was confident the road surface could be restored by 9 Oct 2025. However, over four months have passed and the road remains incomplete and unusable by the public, marking a severe breach of promise. If the government wants to demonstrate firmness in enforcing construction standards as claimed, it must apply laws and orders equally without favoritism or granting justice only to allies. Allowing a delayed project causing damage to continue while swiftly punishing other companies only reinforces the image of double standards. He challenged the government to dare to cancel Sino-Thai’s contract to prove genuine commitment to public safety over political interests.
