Prime Minister Calls Trump’s Letter Charming and Invites Participation in Peace Committee, Urges Patience Before Cambodia

The Prime Minister revealed that he has received the invitation to join the Peace Committee, calling the letter charming since Donald Trump signed it with his nickname. He explained that he needs to allow time for the next government to decide because the current one is caretaker and asked people not to worry or think too much about Cambodia receiving the letter before Thailand.

On 23 January 2026 GMT+7, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, spoke about the case where Donald J. Trump, former President of the United States, sent a letter inviting participation in the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict and the U.S. initiative to establish a Board of Peace, which is under review. He said he has received the letter and described it as very charming because Donald J. Trump did not use a formal signature but signed simply as “Donald.”

He acknowledged the intent and responded that, as a caretaker government, they cannot commit to anything binding on the new administration but will forward the matter to the next government’s leaders. If this issue remains pending, he hopes it will be considered to bring the greatest benefit to Thailand.

Benefits of joining the Peace Committee highlighted.

Regarding the pros and cons of joining the Peace Committee, Anutin said the benefits are numerous, including promoting peace, stability, and building international networks. The downside would be significant costs. It depends on the new government’s decision whether the financial expense is justified by the many benefits, such as national peace and neutrality without serving the interests of any particular country. For now, his role is simply to forward the matter.

When asked why the letter was sent at this time, Anutin said not to overthink it because the government's duties continue as usual.

Asked whether it relates to the ongoing border dispute being addressed, the Prime Minister said the letter likely does not refer specifically to the Thailand-Cambodia dispute because similar letters have been sent to dozens of other countries, some of which have accepted, some are considering, and some have declined. As mentioned, Thailand cannot decide yet and asks for more time.

Request not to overthink why Cambodia received the letter before Thailand.

Regarding the EU countries’ opposition, Anutin explained it stems from differing geopolitical situations among countries.

Concerning Cambodia receiving the letter before Thailand, he urged not to overthink it, as all countries received it around the same time. He said overthinking wastes mental energy and encouraged focusing on what benefits the country.

When asked how the Bhumjaithai Party would consider this if it forms the next government, Anutin said it depends on the situation, not just the bilateral issues with neighbors but also regional and global connections. Thailand is not influential enough to affect other countries’ decisions directly, so all factors have positives and negatives. He emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the people.
