Consequences of Not Voting in the 2026 Election: Up to Six Rights May Be Lost

2026 Election: Voters are warned that if they do not exercise their voting rights and fail to notify a valid reason for their absence, they may lose up to six rights and face political restrictions for up to two years.
On 28 Jan 2026, after the election campaign has begun, the Election Commission (EC) announced that 1 Feb 2026 will be the advance voting day, and 8 Feb 2026 will be the general election day. If a voter does not participate in the election and fails to provide a valid reason by the deadline, they may face political restrictions for two years (counted from the election date). The rights lost include:
If you do not vote, you will lose six rights.
- The right to file objections against the election of Members of Parliament.
- The right to stand for election at the national and local levels (MP, Senator, local council member, or local executive).
- The right to run for the positions of village headman or village chief.
- Prohibition from holding political civil service positions and political parliamentary civil service roles.
- Prohibition from holding positions in local administrative organizations, such as deputy local executives, secretaries or advisors to local executives, or secretaries to the local council chairman.
- The right to initiate petitions to remove local council members or local executives from office.
However, if a new election occurs later and the voter participates, the previously restricted political rights will be fully restored.
