Army Confirms Border Surveillance Continues Unabated, Intelligence Shows No Cause for Concern

The Army spokesperson revealed there is no concern about a new round of clashes, reaffirming that border surveillance remains fully staffed. He noted that Cambodia’s digging of trenches is a domestic image-building effort and confirmed that intelligence information shows nothing worrisome.

On 29 Jan 2026 at the Army Headquarters Command (B.K.T.) Major General Winthai Suwaree, Army spokesperson, provided updates on the Thai-Cambodian border situation, particularly regarding reports of seven gunshots near Preah Vihear last night. He said there were no reports confirming this incident and suggested such sounds in the border area could arise from various causes, such as weapon training exercises. He emphasized that intelligence data does not indicate any cause for concern.

Regarding rumors of new clashes near the border, especially close to the general election, he confirmed the Army is prepared, has not reduced forces, and continues vigilant surveillance to strengthen security. However, the situation remains uncertain, so it is impossible to confirm if clashes will occur. He stressed that intelligence data is still not worrisome since Cambodia’s current operations remain within their own territory, without encroaching on Thai sovereignty as in the past.

Concerning reports of trench digging and foreign weapon support as news has indicated, there is no evidence this is reinforcement for combat preparations. He recounted that even before the previous clashes, Cambodia often dug trenches as a routine practice, even when tensions were low. This is likely a domestic image-building tradition, showing Cambodian citizens that their military remains active and capable of countering Thailand. He affirmed that if Cambodian operations exceed the levels Thailand deems acceptable, discussions will take place. The military has ways to assess the seriousness of such operations.

Additionally, the Army spokesperson showed no concern over Cambodia’s complaints to international organizations accusing Thailand of aggression, saying these are common tactics by Cambodia, which relies on foreign donations and international support. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continuously counters Cambodia’s complaints on various platforms.

Army to hold tribute ceremony for Thai-Cambodian border heroes, honoring 46 fallen soldiers on Veterans Day.

At the same time, Major General Winthai revealed that on 3 Feb, the Army Commander will hold a tribute event for soldiers who died performing duties along the Thai-Cambodian border during two major operations: the Yuthahatthi and the Century Operation. The date coincides with Veterans Day, chosen for its significance and to respectfully invite the families of the fallen.

Morning activities will include an exhibition recalling the military missions of both operations and a tribute to the 46 deceased. The public, officials, and supporters can pay respects and offer encouragement from 09:00. In the afternoon, there will be a Buddhist ceremony at about 15:00, followed by engraving the names of the deceased on a plaque at the Army Memorial Wall before the official tribute ceremony at the front lawn of the Army Headquarters. The highlight will be presenting meaningful items and assistance to the families of the deceased.

The Army spokesperson emphasized that the Army Commander prioritizes care for personnel and the families of the fallen, viewing every soldier as a life partner in duty. Support for families of the deceased and injured continues as if they remain part of the Army family.

Regarding border troop allowances, the Army Commander ordered immediate resolution upon learning of the issue, as the situation required reinforcement of 30,000–40,000 soldiers, far exceeding the regular 7,000–8,000 annual budgeted personnel. The Army used contingency and central funds to address the urgent problem.

The budget was recently approved and transferred to units last week. The next step is direct payment to personnel, which is now beyond the Army’s responsibility. The spokesperson confirmed that any mismanagement will be strictly punished. For death or disability compensation of about 10 million baht per case, mostly state-funded, the spokesperson said most payments have been made, with further verification to ensure completeness.
