The Election Commission has resolved to request the Bank of Thailand to provide details of money transfers or withdrawals involving irregularities, specifically withdrawals of 100- and 500-baht banknotes during the parliamentary election period.
The Office of the Election Commission released news bulletin No. 99/2569 dated 29 January 2026 GMT+7.
The Election Commission has resolved to ask the Bank of Thailand to provide details of money transfers or withdrawals during the parliamentary election period.
According to reports, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) discovered irregularities in cash withdrawals exceeding 250 million baht over the past 10 days, primarily involving the exchange of 100- and 500-baht banknotes. These suspicious activities have been referred to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) and the Election Commission for further investigation.
Today (29 January 2026 GMT+7), the Office of the Election Commission reported to the Election Commission meeting regarding news that the Bank of Thailand detected unusually large cash withdrawals during the election period, mainly in 500- and 100-baht banknotes. Given the timing, these withdrawals are reasonably suspected to be connected to illegal acts or violations of election laws and political party regulations. Therefore, to support the Election Commission's duties and authority in overseeing elections to ensure they are honest, fair, and lawful, the Commission, under Section 32 (2) of the Organic Act on the Election Commission of 2017, requests the Bank of Thailand to provide details of any irregular money transfers or withdrawals. This information will assist the Commission in exercising its duties. The Election Commission has approved this request as proposed by its office and has assigned the office to carry out related actions.
