Election Commission Ready to Investigate Irregular Fund Withdrawals, Affirms Dr. Supat Still Eligible for Songkhla MP Election

The Chairman of the Election Commission revealed readiness to open an investigation case on irregular fund disbursements immediately once the Bank of Thailand provides the data. He emphasized that Dr. Supat remains qualified to run for MP in Songkhla's 2nd district.

On 30 Jan 2026 at 16:30 at Lido Connect, Siam Square, Mr. Narong Klunwarin, Chairman of the Election Commission, updated on the progress in requesting details regarding irregular money transfers or withdrawals during the MP election period from the Bank of Thailand (BOT). He said that on 29 Jan, the Election Commission held a meeting on this matter and requested information from the BOT about the suspicious transfers or withdrawals. Today, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Election Commission has coordinated with the BOT, which has promised to gradually provide the data promptly so the Election Commission can include it in their investigation. However, the Election Commission has not yet received the data from the BOT; once received, they will convene immediately.

He reiterated that Dr. Supat remains qualified as a candidate for MP in Songkhla's 2nd district.

Mr. Narong also addressed the issue regarding Dr. Supat Hasuwannakit, former director of Saba Yoi Hospital and candidate for MP in Songkhla's 2nd district from the People's Party. Regarding his dismissal from government service, the director of the Songkhla Election Commission has requested information from the Ministry of Public Health but has not yet received a response. Therefore, the Songkhla Election Commission does not have clear information on what disciplinary actions Dr. Supat has faced or whether there are any prohibitions affecting his candidacy.

When asked if the Minister of Public Health, who signed the order dismissing Dr. Supat, also being a party-list MP candidate, would create an election advantage or disadvantage, the Election Commission Chairman said there is none. He emphasized that the disciplinary process is under the Ministry of Public Health and that reports on Dr. Supat’s disciplinary offenses are awaited. Currently, Dr. Supat is still considered qualified as a candidate for MP in Songkhla's 2nd district.
