Can Expired ID Cards Be Used for Voting? Alternative Identification Options

Election 2026: February 8 is the decisive day for Thailand's future. Remember to exercise your right to vote for the right candidate and your preferred party. It is stressed that even expired ID cards can still be used for identification.

Can expired ID cards be used for voting?

On 4 February 2026, the election for members of the House of Representatives both by constituency and party-list, as well as a referendum, was set for 8 February 2026. However, if any citizen has an expired ID card and cannot renew it in time, they may use the expired ID card to verify their identity for voting, according to the regulations of the Election Commission (EC).

Identification documents accepted for voting

  •   ID card: Both valid and expired ID cards are accepted.
  • Other government-issued documents: Such as driver's licenses, passports, or official state officer ID cards, but these documents must still be valid to be accepted.
  • Digital evidence: Can be shown via government applications such as ThaID (digital ID card) or DLT QR LICENCE (digital driver's license).

On 8 February 2026, polling will be open from 08:00 to 17:00. Besides voting for House representatives, do not forget to participate in the referendum at the same time. You can verify your eligibility and queue number at the polling station or through the Smart Vote app for convenience.
