Can Expired ID Cards Be Used for Voting? What Other Identification Is Accepted?

Election 2026: February 8 is the day that will decide Thailand's future. Don't forget to exercise your right to vote for the candidate and party you support. It is emphasized that even expired ID cards can still be presented as identification.

On February 4, 2026, the election for constituency and party-list members of the House of Representatives, as well as the referendum, is scheduled for February 8, 2026. However, if anyone's ID card has expired and they have not had time to renew it, they can still use their expired ID card to identify themselves and vote, according to the regulations of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT).

Identification documents accepted for voting

  •   Identification card: Both valid and expired ID cards are accepted.
  • Other government-issued documents: Such as driver's licenses, passports, or official state employee ID cards. However, these documents must still be valid (not expired) to be accepted.
  • Digital identification: Can be shown via government applications, such as ThaID (digital ID card) or DLT QR LICENCE (digital driver's license).

On February 8, 2026, polling stations will be open for voting from 08:00 to 17:00. Besides voting for House of Representatives candidates, don't forget to cast your vote in the referendum as well. Voters can check their eligibility and queue number at the polling station or via the Smart Vote app for convenience.
