New-Generation Senators Urge New Government to Include Peoples Constitution Roadmap in Policy Statement

The "New-Generation Senators" are pressing the new government to include a roadmap for the "People's Constitution" in its policy statement, while warning against the constitutional drafting committee selection formula that could allow the blue faction to dominate.

On 10 February 2026, the New-Generation Senators group, led by Mr. Noraset Prachyakon, Chair of the Political Development Committee, together with Ms. Nantana Nantawaropas and colleagues, held a press conference to thank the over 19.8 million citizens who voted in favor of drafting a new constitution. Mr. Noraset called on the new government to clearly define the timeline and process for drafting the new constitution in its policy statement to Parliament, in order to fulfill the people's will. He proposed holding a second referendum no later than the end of 2026 and urged that the process be open and inclusive of all citizen groups transparently.

Ms. Nantana noted that the approval votes in this referendum exceeded those in 2016, and therefore she urged the large group of senators in the Senate to respect the people's consensus and cooperate in voting for constitutional amendments in all three readings, to pave the way for a complete redrafting.

Senator Thewarit Maneechai expressed concern about the proposed amendment to Section 256 pending in Parliament, especially the formula for selecting members of the Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA), which allows Parliament to form selection groups internally. Considering the election results where the Bhumjaithai Party won many seats and enjoys Senate support, this could result in drafters entirely aligned with the 'blue faction.' He proposed that the constitution drafters be selected through direct or indirect elections most closely linked to the people.
