Citizens Gather at Bangkok Art and Chiang Mai University Urging Election Commission for Transparent Recount

Citizens gathered at the plaza of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and Sala Ang Kaew at Chiang Mai University to demand a vote recount following concerns over the Election Commission's transparency.

On 10 February 2026 at 18:00, in front of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre on Rama I Road near the MBK Skywalk, the Thammasat and Demonstration Coalition assembled to symbolically express the public's demand that the Election Commission change its procedures to be more honest, transparent, and trustworthy if it wishes to respect the votes cast by the people.

The crowd held symbolic cardboard signs calling for a vote recount and criticizing the Election Commission's work. Besides the plaza in front of the Art Centre, some protesters stood on the skywalk observing the exchange of opinions among themselves.

A representative of the protesters stated that this demonstration was to stand up for their rights and votes, as the election process—especially vote counting in several areas including Maha Sarakham and Chonburi provinces—still faces problems. The public has taken on the role of demanding a new vote count.

Additionally, there are concerns about the high budget allocated for each election, which seems at odds with the outcomes. Despite lessons from previous elections, the budget could be integrated to ensure the election uses more reliable, transparent, and modern technology.

This gathering had no central leader but featured representatives from the public expressing their stance and giving interviews. They said that after the election and during the vote count, problems arose in many areas—especially Chonburi District 1—such as the failure to lock ballot boxes with cable ties and discovery of counting sheets in trash bins.

These issues are unacceptable to the public and raise suspicions about how many other areas face similar problems. They demand a full vote recount and that the Election Commission take responsibility. They emphasized that their call is not to change the election outcome but to ensure every vote cast is valued and that counting is accurate and transparent.

Chiang Mai University students gathered at Sala Ang Kaew, expressing dissatisfaction with the Election Commission's performance.

In Chiang Mai Province, students and the Lanna Action Group assembled at Sala Ang Kaew at Chiang Mai University, holding signs demanding the Election Commission conduct a recount after many areas reported discrepancies between vote counts and the official website and bulletin board announcements.

One student at the protest said that this gathering was organized through word of mouth and social media posts, aiming to stand in solidarity with people in Chonburi District 1. They sought to show the seven Election Commissioners that the public is unhappy with their work, which is funded by taxpayers’ money, and called for a nationwide vote recount with public access to audit the process.
