Prime Minister Orders Full Care for Soldier Stepping on Bomb, Calls for Negotiations with Hostage-Taking Suspect

The Prime Minister ordered full care for a soldier who stepped on a bomb in Sisaket and expedited negotiations with a frenzied hostage-taker in Hat Yai, before the situation eased with the suspect releasing the hostages and surrendering.

On 11 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acknowledged the incident of a soldier stepping on a landmine in the 2nd Army Area in Sisaket Province. He noted that this area was secured by Thailand after Cambodia’s prior occupation. He ordered care for the injured and heightened safety measures for bomb disposal units, while also monitoring the tense hostage situation in Hat Yai, urging officials to swiftly negotiate to help the teachers and students involved.

The Prime Minister stated that the landmines involved were remnants from areas where the Thai military re-established security after replacing former Cambodian control. Despite ongoing clearance efforts, some mines remained, leading to this unfortunate event. He instructed that the injured soldier receive the best possible care and ordered bomb disposal units to accelerate and exercise greater caution in their clearance operations. Meanwhile, the 2nd Army Area has been working to inform local residents to alleviate their concerns.

Regarding the incident where a suspect went on a rampage taking teachers and students hostage at Patong Prathan Kirivat School in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, the Prime Minister said that the Police Region 9 Commander and the 4th Army Area Commander are directing operations on site. Officials are currently negotiating to ensure the hostages’ safety. The injured have been transferred to hospitals for treatment. It is believed the suspect’s actions stem from drug-induced delirium, an issue requiring urgent and decisive action.

Most recently, the suspect has released the hostages and surrendered peacefully.
