Pheu Thai Party Thanks Public for Referendum Approval, Paving the Way for a New Constitution

The Pheu Thai Party's Referendum Communication Committee issued a statement thanking the public for the referendum "approve" result, which opens the way to a new constitution. The committee's mission has been fully achieved.

On 12 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Chaturon Chaisang, along with Mr. Chusak Sirinil and the Referendum Communication and People's Constitution Committee, held a press conference to congratulate and thank Thai citizens who exercised their right to vote in the referendum, resulting in approval for drafting a new constitution. The unofficial results (94% counted as of 11:00 on 12 Feb) show 19.9 million votes in favor, with expectations that the final tally will exceed 20 million approvals.

Mr. Chaturon stated that the people's decision marks a crucial step toward drafting a new constitution anchored in the public's will, reflecting Thai society's desire to reform the country's "highest rule" toward greater democracy. Holding the referendum alongside the general election emphasizes the public's wish to participate in shaping the country's future both by electing representatives and by jointly deciding on the constitution, which sets the long-term democratic direction of Thailand.

The Pheu Thai Party's Referendum Communication and People's Constitution Committee was established by Pheu Thai Party Order No. 0017/2568 dated 19 Dec 2025 to communicate, build understanding, and campaign legally and systematically for citizens to vote "approve" in the referendum. This aligns with Pheu Thai's democracy policy submitted to the Election Commission (No. 41), affirming that "people must have more power" through laws reflecting citizens' needs and collective decision-making via referendums. This includes enabling public participation in drafting a new constitution, campaigning for referendum participation to decide the country's future, and reforming independent bodies to be accountable, fair, and balanced. Throughout, the committee conducted proactive campaigns including public communications, community visits, and collaborative activities with networks to ensure citizens "receive information–understand–vote–approve." These efforts combined creative community activities with communication via campaign and speech forums explaining the necessity and details of the new constitution and voting procedures, supported by standardized materials like reminder cards, a 9-question Q&A guide for citizens, and candidate/party representative manuals to ensure consistent nationwide messaging.

Additionally, the committee organized small discussion forums and talks across several regions, reaching diverse groups including ethnic minorities to listen to proposals and emphasize that "the constitution concerns everyone" and every voice matters. Symbolic campaigns understandable at the community level, such as market walks, citizen meetings, friendly participatory activities, as well as caravans and parade trucks, were used to communicate directly to homes and communities and encourage broad voter turnout.

Pheu Thai Party affirms that all activities aimed to provide accurate, easy-to-understand information so people could meaningfully exercise their rights within legal and regulatory frameworks. The key goal was to invite citizens to vote and ensure the referendum's "approval" succeeded in line with the people's will. Today, the committee announces that its campaign mission has been accomplished and will report the operation results, lessons learned, findings, and the people's intent to the Pheu Thai Party.

This success resulted from cooperation among civil society, partner networks, various political parties, all media sectors, and most importantly, citizens nationwide who understood the issues and the need for a new constitution. The committee thanks all involved parties who helped make this meaningful exercise of rights possible. The "approval" in this referendum is an important first step, but the path to a new constitution owned by the people still requires many further efforts to be pushed forward collectively.

Therefore, the critical next mission will be passed to the "Parliament," the main mechanism to advance the people's intent. The committee calls on all parties to promote transparent, fair processes that continuously engage the public. The people's "approve" vote should not end on voting day but must be fully leveraged in the legislative arena through the roles of House representatives, senators, and political parties to fulfill the people's referendum mandate. However, progress cannot rely on Parliament alone; all parties should clarify and campaign to maximize public information and participation to ensure the new constitution drafting process is truly democratic and genuinely belongs to the people.
