Bhumjaithai Negotiates to Reclaim Ministry of Agriculture, Threatens No Government Participation if Denied

Bhumjaithai is preparing to reclaim the Ministry of Agriculture as part of coalition negotiations with Kla Tham, aiming to have Mrs. Supajee oversee the distribution of agricultural products alongside exports. They warn they will not back the government if their demands are not met.

On 13 Jan 2026 GMT+7, a reporter from Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) reported on government formation progress, noting that the party expects the Election Commission to certify the election results soon, prompting an urgent need to form a government. Currently, BJT holds 193 seats, Pheu Thai 74, Kla Tham 58, and all smaller parties combined have 35 seats, except for Thai Pakdee (1 seat), Prachachart (5 seats), and Ruam Thai Sang Chart (2 seats). Thus, smaller parties joining the coalition total 27 seats. However, BJT wants Mrs. Supajee Suthumpan to serve as Deputy Prime Minister overseeing the Ministry of Commerce and supervising the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. This is to ensure agricultural production aligns with export strategies under the Ministry of Commerce. Therefore, BJT insists that the Ministry of Agriculture, currently led by Col. Thammanat Phromphao, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Kla Tham's advisory chairman, be allocated to BJT's quota.

However, Col. Thammanat has so far refused, insisting on keeping his current quota. This forces Bhumjaithai to rally Pheu Thai and other smaller parties to pressure Kla Tham into relinquishing the ministry; otherwise, Kla Tham risks exclusion from the government coalition. Additionally, many factions within Bhumjaithai are displeased with Kla Tham's political tactics, which target Bhumjaithai's voter base in areas including those represented by Mr. Warawut Silpa-archa and Mr. Chada Thaiset.

The reporter also noted that the Democrat Party is still considering whether to join the coalition, while the Palang Pracharath Party, led by Acting Leader and Labour Minister Ms. Trinuch Thienthong, who previously met with Bhumjaithai, has submitted a condition to retain their current ministry.
