A network of students from nine universities united to file a lawsuit against the Election Commission over ballots featuring barcodes and QR codes, urging the court to order a new election and temporarily suspend certification of the results, fearing irreparable harm.
On 16 February at the Administrative Court on Chaeng Watthana Road, representatives of a student network from nine leading educational institutions, led by Mr. Theeraphat Supapitakpaiboon, coordinator of the Thammasat and Demonstration group, along with representatives from Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, Khon Kaen University, King Mongkut's University of Technology Ladkrabang, Chiang Mai University, Mae Fah Luang University, Rajabhat University, and Srinakharinwirot University, filed a lawsuit against the Election Commission (EC) and its Secretary-General at the Central Administrative Court concerning the election held on 8 February 2026.
The complainants stated that this election was “illegal” because the ballots were printed with barcodes that could be traced back to the voter’s identity, violating the fundamental principle of “secret voting” clearly stipulated in the constitution. They therefore requested the court to declare the 8 February election null and void and order the EC to conduct a new election in accordance with the law.
Furthermore, the student network filed a request for a temporary injunction asking the court to “suspend the certification of the election results” until a final judgment is reached, to prevent serious damage should the MPs be certified and seated prematurely. They also asked the court to prohibit the EC from using QR code systems or any other technology linking voters’ identities in future elections, urging the court to consider the matter urgently for the highest benefit of the state and its people.
