Sihasak Watches Hun Manets Global Tour, Ready to Respond if Border Information Is Distorted

Sihasak declared readiness to respond if Hun Manet distorts border information during his global tour, stating that the cancellation of MOU 44 must wait for the new government’s decision.

On 17 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Foreign Minister Sihasak Puangketkaew spoke about the direction of Thailand-Cambodia relations and border disputes, emphasizing vigilance over information shared internationally and clarity on managing the overlapping areas under MOU 44. He noted that canceling MOU 44 in principle requires submission to the incoming Cabinet for consideration and careful consultation with the Prime Minister and the National Security Council.

The Foreign Minister also said the key issue is the options after cancellation. If MOU 44 is canceled, it may not be necessary to create a new MOU; instead, "international law" could serve as the standard for negotiations, similar to the Thailand-Malaysia border dispute. Any new rules must have mutual agreement; if not, negotiations should follow international processes. He has ordered preparations of information regarding cancellation options.

When asked about Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s meetings with world leaders like Donald Trump and his request for historical border documents from French President Emmanuel Macron, the Foreign Minister said Thailand is closely monitoring these developments. If deliberately distorted information is presented internationally, Thailand is ready to respond and clarify facts immediately. The Ministry has inquired with France about the documents Cambodia requested and is tracking this information.

Regarding the fire at the Thailand-Cambodia border, Sihasak said they are awaiting investigation reports. An upcoming National Security Council meeting will comprehensively discuss issues related to the Cambodia and Myanmar borders, preparing data for the new government to manage going forward.
