Somchai and Yaowapha visited Thaksin at the prison and addressed the issue of their son Yossanan not accepting a ministerial position in the Bhumjaithai government, saying it is a party matter and they only offer support to him.
At Klong Prem Central Prison at 10:30 a.m. on 19 Feb 2026, Somchai Wongsawat, former Prime Minister, his wife Yaowapha Wongsawat, and Banpot Damapong, representing the family, visited former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. His personal lawyer, Winyat Chatmontri, accompanied them.
After spending about 1 hour and 30 minutes visiting Thaksin inside the prison, Somchai told reporters that he visited as usual because it had been a long time since their last meeting. He said he was concerned and missed him, so he took the opportunity to visit. It was a normal family matter. Regarding Thaksin's health, he said he is still okay and strong with no problems.
When asked about the news that Professor Dr. Yossanan Wongsawat, their son, had declined a ministerial position in the Bhumjaithai coalition government and whether Thaksin agreed with that, Somchai said this is a political matter for the party to discuss. He is not involved with the party and recognizes their roles. He said they only offer support. Whatever policies Yossanan and the party decide on will be handled by them. They just encourage him and accept his decisions as adults. He added there is no concern from their side.
Regarding whether Professor Dr. Yossanan consulted with the family, Somchai said that political matters are mostly discussed within the party. At home, they just eat together and enjoy playing with the grandchildren like typical elders, supporting each other. They tell him it is good that he is working and that many people admire him, which makes them proud. They offer encouragement. Thaksin has not given any specific instructions to Yossanan; he only knows what is in the news but also offers support. Thaksin is not in a position to act on these matters.
When asked if it would be a missed opportunity if Yossanan did not accept any position this time, Somchai shook his head and said he respects Yossanan's decision. He is not involved in party management and said the party must consider political factors. Somchai said he remains neutral as an adult who can work for the country and that they must let Yossanan use his own abilities. He does not interfere or participate in decision-making.
Regarding the Pheu Thai Party joining with Bhumjaithai, Somchai said he only heard from the news that Bhumjaithai invited Pheu Thai for coalition talks, as everyone knows. He said it is part of working for the country and that whatever the outcome, if it benefits the people, then it should be done. He said he will watch and support them, and if they succeed in serving the public, he will be glad.
