Election Commission Addresses Claims That Referendum Ballots Are Unsafe, Affirms Strict Anti-Counterfeiting Measures and Security

The Election Commission (EC) counters Abhisit’s claim that referendum ballots are unsafe, affirming this is untrue. They emphasize that the ballots contain codes or marks to prevent counterfeiting and that strict security measures are in place.

At 12:42 p.m. on 21 February 2026, the Election Commission (EC) issued a statement responding to Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, who expressed concerns that the referendum ballots are unsafe. The EC affirmed that it has preventive measures in place and operates in accordance with the law.

Regarding news reports that Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, commented that "referendum ballots are unsafe," the Election Commission clarifies that such a statement is not true.

Referendum ballots include codes, marks, or other special inscriptions to prevent forgery. There are stringent security measures in place, complying with the 2022 EC regulations on referendum voting, specifically Article 68, paragraph 3, which states, “The Election Commission may designate codes, marks, or other special inscriptions on ballots without prior notice to prevent forgery.” Importantly, referendum ballots are the key instrument that eligible voters use to cast their votes directly and confidentially, reflecting their true intent.

The Election Commission reaffirms its duty to ensure that the referendum and election processes are conducted honestly, fairly, and in full compliance with the law at every step.
