Today, 23 February 2026, reporters report that the Senate is set to convene an extraordinary session No. 1 on Wednesday, 26 February 2026, at 09:30. A key agenda is the urgent consideration to approve two nominees for the position of Election Commissioners to fill vacant terms: Mr. Jiruth Visalajit and Mr. Monthon Sudprasert. A vote will be held on whether to approve or disapprove the nominations.
Previously, the Senate appointed a standing committee to verify the backgrounds, conduct, and ethical behavior of the nominees for Election Commissioner positions. The committee was mandated to complete its work within 60 days from the date of appointment, which ended on Saturday, 21 February 2026.
The standing committee conducted background checks, behavior, and ethics reviews of the nominees by coordinating with 19 related government agencies and offices. They also assessed ethical conduct according to standards for Constitutional Court judges and officials in independent agencies, including the Auditor-General and heads of administrative units of the Constitutional Court and independent organizations. The committee interviewed current and former supervisors, colleagues, and subordinates of the nominees. The results are contained in the committee's confidential report.
