Prime Minister Discusses Security with Army Chief Amid Cambodias 40mm Grenade Fire into Thailand

Prime Minister Anutin met with security officials to receive reports on the border situation. The Army Commander noted that Cambodia's firing of 40mm grenade rounds into Thailand does not yet require a forceful response, while the Army Chief of Staff stressed that Thai soldiers have measures to manage the situation effectively.

On 24 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul spoke at Government House about inviting security agencies to report on the Thailand-Cambodia border situation. He said today was not a special security meeting but a regular gathering where he requested time for discussion. Regarding Cambodia’s use of 40mm grenade launchers firing near Thai patrol points in the Phlan Hin Paed Kon area, the Prime Minister said he would first listen to reports from security agencies.

It was reported that the Prime Minister invited security officials, including the Permanent Secretary of Defense, the Permanent Secretary of Interior, and the Army Chief of Staff, presumably to report on the situation involving Cambodia firing 40mm grenade rounds into the Phlan Hin Paed Kon area.

Army Commander General Phana Klaewplaodtuk commented on the incident of Cambodian troops firing 40mm grenade rounds into Thai territory, saying the Prime Minister invited the Permanent Secretary of Defense for discussions on the issue at the Thai Khu Fa building. Asked if any orders had been given to troops on site, the Commander said the field commanders were already handling it. When asked if strong measures were necessary, General Phana confirmed they were not.

Army Chief of Staff General Chaiphruek Duangprapat revealed that the military is currently conducting a thorough investigation. Preliminary findings show the shots were fired about 100 meters from the border, originating from Cambodia, near where Thai soldiers patrol. He attributed the incident to a lack of discipline among Cambodian troops.

Asked whether a formal protest would be made to Cambodia, the Army Chief of Staff said protests have already been lodged locally. The Army is considering further actions. He acknowledged that repeated incidents would cause problems, emphasizing the need for measures to manage the situation calmly. Military measures would be the last resort and will be applied appropriately.

When pressed on whether repeated incidents could lead to a third confrontation, the Army Chief of Staff affirmed they would not allow recurring events. Coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be made to raise the issue at the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew is attending that meeting.
